“He’s my dad, and he’s in the kitchen,” she said. “I’ll go get him.”

She looked wary but headed toward the kitchen and soon returned with a man with a goatee.

“Hello,” he said. “My daughter Jill must be mistaken. She said the police were here. But we haven’t had any unruly customers lately. We’ve had very few in general. And we’re up to date on all health code ordinances.”

“We are the police. I’m Detective Shepherd, and this is my partner, Detective Peters. Accompanying us are two private investigators who have been helpful on previous cases.”
